Grigorov’s Act: Free Movement of Lines
The word “act” has its proper meaning for everybody. But, first of all, an act is an action - process, movement. This is dynamics, not only physical, but the dynamics of internal meaningfulness, perception of importance of what takes place, beautiful or brute, destructive or creative.
Beginning a painting is also an act; creating a vision, which depicts or, even more, fixes this process on the canvas or paper. A fixed moment of truth or pharisaism. A painter is a creator, but he cannot act alone. Each painting is a mirror of his soul, that later shall look in the spectator’s face with the eyes of love or evil, carnality or romantic outburst.
Viktor Grigorov is a mature artist, that is an undoubted fact, but, in spite of it, he is in no way a fixed “living classical author”. His style, his brush strokes, are identified at first sight, but it is astonishing that like “a priori” some creative canon does not exist within fixed running on his personal circle. His lines are living, in permanent movement, they dance an elaborate dance, they make fabulous labyrinths of escaping shapes. Grigorov paints a real, endless act of life, eternal. Perhaps that is why his numerous canvases and papers have a simple multilayer name — “The Act”.
This entire irrepressible process - both the artist’s life and the life of his almost invisible scintillating images - becomes a strong knot of intensified acts. It will become a large personal exhibition under the eloquent and audacious name “Me — Grigorov”.
Grigorov is a well known Ukrainian artist, and many foreign museums and private collections are proud to acquire his works.
First of all Grigorov is a muralist. He has worked with the wall painting of Kyiv St. Michael Cathedral and participated in many other significant and symbolic works. Despite the picture fluidity and expression, just knowledge of the muralism principles makes Grigorov’s works tectonically and structurally rigid, saturated with precise sharp lines, aligned by composition and colour choices. His works have no bright palette, they appear almost graphic-grisaille, images do not give the impression of being abstruse, conceptual; they are minimally simple and that is why they are syncretically symbolic. They are symbols of “action”, “movement”, “course of time and space”. And in spite of a such hard “base”, “lining”, the works of Grigorov are incredibly, masterly light. This is a result of experience, understanding of material and the process, emerging in practically genial image simplicity, stylisation which does not break the image, but on the contrary, lets it remain undisguised and realistic, “skinned” of unnecessary trivial details.
The experts described him: “Grigorov paints, delighting with the unlimited lines running weightless, black blots like snowflakes: he’s creating a translucent feminine flesh, practically a spirit, filled with aroma and mystery of feelings, beautiful like a celestial guest, keeping her mystery of being, like a dream in a dream”. Even though he himself lived through his works getting ruined, knew abundance and poverty, was beloved by his friends albeit not completely understood by them, in the end Viktor Grigorov’s work gained glory and recognition.
